What is a Nautical Charter and its Regulation in Panama?
A nautical charter is the commercial activity of renting recreational vessels, with or without a captain (skipper), for tourism, sports, or recreational purposes. This industry is part of the growing nautical tourism sector, which significantly drives the economic and commercial development of Panama’s coastal areas.
Uribe & Asociados was one of the first three law firms in Panama to successfully obtain a nautical charter operating license from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).
This commercial activity requires a license issued by the AMP, which is valid for 10 years and is granted once the technical, legal, and administrative requirements established by the entity are met.
Panama: Maritime and Tourism Hub
Thanks to its strategic geographical position, Panama has become a vital bridge between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This has favored the development of a robust maritime infrastructure, composed of several clusters of auxiliary maritime services designed to serve vessels, crews, and various logistical operations.
Permitted Recreational Nautical Activities:
Within the framework of national tourism development, the Panamanian government promotes and regulates various nautical activities, which generate a positive impact on the local economy. Among these, the most notable are:
Nautical Charter or Recreational Vessel Rental: Leasing yachts, catamarans, boats, or other vessels for leisure, sport fishing, or tourist excursions.
Nautical-Sports Activities: All recreational navigation in private vessels, including yachts and mega-yachts, whether for sports or leisure purposes.
